![]() Though I live 1 hour from Jersey, I travel the 3 for Assateague. But I prefer this beach over ones I'm been in Jersey, Outer Banks, Bahamas and Dominica. Maybe its just because I've been going there since I was 9 months old and nostalgia is a motivator. I prefer the state side over the national side and the Maryland side over the Virginia side. The waves vary but are usually rougher than the Jersey shore. A beach where you have plenty of room, easy access to beaches and bathrooms and don't get charged a fortune? The beach is short so its not a huge walk. The crowds at the beach always shock us.sometimes we are the only group on the beach for our loop. We walk down to the day beach every once in a while, sometimes for ice cream or a camping supply we don't need to go into town for. I agree that the bathhouses could be cleaner. So either we are suckers or this place is pretty great. Our group keeps growing and we haven't missed a year despite pregnancies and babies. It started with my mom as a teenager and now I'm bringing my kids along with my sister's family and some family friends. My family has been camping here for 40+ years. I prefer the National park-it tends to be much less crowded than the State Park. There are no concessions on the National side, and has only cold showers. ![]() On the National beach one can have a campfire on the beach, and pets are allowed in non-lifeguard area on a leash. There on many more restrictions in the State Park-no grills, no alcohol, no pets during the summer season. The National Park is further south on the access road and charges $15 for a 7 day pass or $30 for an annual pass-a bargain. The State Park is closest to the bridge and is on the northernmost part of the access road. Fees are per person or MD state park passes. The State Park is a little more oriented towards families-with hot showers, concessions. Both areas share the Assateague barrier island and are accessed by the a 2 lane bridge and parallel bike bridge from MD Rte. The park is open year-round.There seems to be confusion about the 2 places but it it is really quite simple. There is a small fee to enter the park and further fees for vehicles. The Verrazano Bridge is 9.1 miles (14.6 kilometers) from Ocean City in Maryland. The Virginia District has a visitor center and a lifeguard-patrolled beach. It is not possible to cross the state line on the island by car. The Maryland side of Assateague Island National Seashore stretches from the Ocean City Inlet to the Virginia state line and is accessible over the Verrazano Bridge. While it is uncertain how the ponies got on the island, many believe they swam to shore from a sinking Spanish galleon cargo ship. You might also see wild ponies frolicking in the shallows from a boat cruise or kayaking trip. Be alert for peregrine falcons, egrets, sand pipers and osprey.
